Just a quick note before I get into it: Mid-block blues got you down? Life get in the way of you getting free ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s yesterday?

Don’t worry, I got you 😉

This Friday, Frost Bite (McConell Engineering Building, inside the EUS Mall) is offering FREE ICE CERAM starting at 12pm!!

As I mentioned during my speech, I plan to bring my enthusiasm and passion for c<3ffee and ice cream to the position of Treasurer. But jokes aside, as treasurer, I will be managing the finances of the class and conducting business affairs on your behalf, and I want to ensure you feel comfortable with who you’re putting your trust in.

I have two undergraduate degrees and a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics. During my undergrad, I co-created a non-profit literacy program to help promote reading and writing skills for elementary school students. Doing so required strong communication skills to be able to partner with public schools, managing the finances of a non-profit, be able to quickly adapt to new situations and work as part of a team.

For a number of years, I was a freelancer for the Globe & Mail and Maclean’s. During this time, I became comfortable with making cold calls and being able to forge connections with outside sources. I would use these freelancing skills to help negotiate deals with nearby businesses. One of my goals as treasurer would be to not only help manage our finances, but also help you save money as students, namely in the form of food (to start!). For instance, I’ve already taken the initiative to speak with our fellow classmate Ali Salimi, who started a restaurant last year, Chez Hailar (their food was mostly recently featured at last week’s UGME meeting), to get us discounts as medical students.

I’m in the process of contacting nearby coffee houses to work on Med student discounts as well, as well as possible sponsorship for upcoming events. What’s Wellness without Java?

I plan to see funds go towards more bonding events in our class. For instance, we had a few small events like the pumpkin painting session, and I’d like to create more opportunities through low-cost activities. I think our class has a real dedication to wellness, and I’d like to see us creating more low-key events where we can have more inter-small group bonding (hopefully C1 will branch out).

Now, about our funds and their management specifically. It’s very important to me that you feel that you know how these finances are being spent, and that you feel it is easy to provide feedback, ideas and suggestions. To streamline the feedback/suggestion process, I propose using the current class suggestion bin/tracking sheet to manage your inquiries and feedback. No hunting around for yet ANOTHER online platform.

As I’ve mentioned, I’m working on discounts for you as students, as well as beginning to approach sponsors. Additionally, here are some projects I’d like to commence to raise more funds for our class:

Food/Art Sales: Where the cheap food at?? Having more Samosa sales in McIntyre would be great, but I’d like to diversify this to other food groups as well (*cough COFFEE *cough). I’d also want to draw on the talent of our diverse student body. We have fantastic artists in our class, and I’d love the opportunity to show case our class’s skills while increasing our cash flow to make our time in Med the best it can be.

It wouldn’t be a campaign by Jenny if I also didn’t mention ice cream. As we head into the spring and summer months, what better way to promote wellness than ice cream? As your Treasurer, I promise to keep you Up-To-Date about free ice cream (and other free or discounted food) events.

Feel free to email, message me or find me in class!
